NZ Sustainable Forest Management Permit Overview Print E-mail
Written by Steve

In New Zealand, by the Forests Act amendment of 1993, all indigenous timber can only be harvested from forests which are managed to have continuous cover,  maintain an ecological balance and where yields do not exceed the natural growth rate  ie: is sustainable in perpetuity. To ensure this, private foresters of native forest must obtain either a Sustainable Forest Management Permit (SFMP) or develop and submit for approval a Sustainable Management Plan. In addition sawmills may only mill logs sourced from forests managed according to sustainable management plans or permits and any sawmills wanting to mill indigenous timber must be registered.

Buyer beware when it comes to precision rules. Even though this company has a good reputation and I was pleased with their 6" rule, the 12" rule does not measure up! What can you do if your measuring device is not accurate?

Is woodworking and forestry inconsistent with being an environmentalist? Print E-mail
Written by Steve
Wednesday, 20 February 2008
Recently the question was asked whether or not there is an inconsistency between being a woodworker ( which can be seen as a consumer of wood ) and being an environmentalist, a tree-hugger? I think there is not. In fact the woodworker who is also a forest owner, as we are, are all the more aware of where our livelihood comes from and we have every incentive to protect it. But we also recognize that our responsibility goes even beyond that.

This TV stand by itself is nothing too extraordinary from a technical woodworking aspect. It has some nice features but the truly interesting thing about this piece was the design process using a freely available 3d modelling tool called Sketchup.

This cutting board actually started some time ago. It was something my partner saw at an outdoor market and I wouldn’t let her buy the one on display because, of course, I announced “I can make one of those for ya”.

In  2007, I attended a month long log home building course. I found it useful to group some thoughts, observations and personal learnings together in several 'chapters'. Part 1 explores chainsaw techniques useful to the trade but also good general chainsaw skills to have.

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
