Don't take R-value of solid wood at face value

This is a reprint of an article on studies which show that taking only the R-value of solid wood is misleading as to its effectiveness as an insulator. Even though it measures worse than other materials, wood has a lot of mass and it actually can store energy, not just prevent the ingress ( or egress) of energy, which is only what R-values measure.

Sketchup plugin Cutlist 4.1 does just that. Then it goes one further and lays out all of the pieces on boards or sheet good sizes of your choosing. Then you should be all set to head for the lumber yard to get all of the materials that you will need with no return trips. Download it now.

Swadeshi

The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi were powerful enough to play a major role in the nonviolent revolution that overthrew British colonialism in India. They are clearly still of utmost relevance today. Central to Gandhi's philosophy was the principle of 'swadeshi', which, in effect, means local self-sufficiency. Satish Kumar elaborates on this important concept.
